Project Manager/Estimator
(This position is located near Ottawa, Ontario)
Basic Function
Reporting to the Senior Project Manager/Estimator (SPM), the Project Manager/Estimator provides direct support in all aspects of the estimate process for major infrastructure projects. He also acts as a project manager involving grading, paving, excavating, sewers, pump stations and various underground utilities projects. In so doing, the Project Manager/Estimator helps to maintain, develop and build strong relationships with vendors, clients and public agency representatives.
Main Duties (duties include but not limited to)
Under the guidance of SPM:
Gathers and maintains accurate and timely information on current costs of materials, supplies and services
Provides general support in the bidding for large excavation, construction, roadway, utility, and paving projects
Researches and contributes good mathematical analysis to build efficient costing methods
Reviews proposal specifications and drawings for project planning in conjunction with foremen and SPM
Prepares detailed estimates by calculating complete takeoff of scope of work and materials
Assists in project cost reviews, and maintains organized files of working project documents
Assists with project start up/set up taking the approved budget and, written proposals, bidding correspondence, project resource needs
Reviews and approves accurately subcontract and supplier invoices
Analyzes alternative solutions and excavation/construction methods to increase competitiveness of the bid and project construction
Interfaces with, negotiates and builds strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and public agencies
Perform other jobs and duties as required or assigned
Education and Qualifications
Successfully completed a postsecondary degree in a field related to civil engineering, at a College technological level or University level
An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities will be considered
2 to 6 years of directly related experience, preferably in heavy civil construction or engineering
Competency in project management, bidding, scheduling, take off, and accounting
Extremely comfortable working in a technology-driven environment
Demonstrate a health and safety conscious attitude
Ideal Profile
Candidate will have
Demonstrated a general knowledge of the heavy civil industry in the private or public sectors
Computer skills including MS Office (especially MS Project Management and Excel), estimating software, and other relevant database and information management tools
Ability to communicate effectively with a broad diversity of audiences: clients, subcontractors, tradesmen, public sector agencies, etc
A valid Ontario driver’s license (or the equivalent)
Acquired excellent team work skills, collaborative approaches with colleagues and clients, and quick problem solving abilities
Strong analytical and mathematical skills, and oral and written communications skills in English (French will be considered an asset)
Effective project planning and organizational abilities, including time management
Interest in advancement opportunities
Compensation
Compensation for this position is commensurate to an entry to mid-level position. Annual salary range is set between $50,000 and $80,000 plus a benefits package depending on experience.
